Keane - Hopes and Fears

Music ShoppingMall celebrates Keane’s debut full-album, “Hopes and Fears”. Blend in the brit pop energy of the newcoming Snow Patrol with a dash of ColdPlay’s emphatic piano-lined choruses, and some heritage influenced lyrics by The Smiths; and you get Keane music.
Keane is 100% true and proper Brit pop band; drums, piano and vocals manned by Tim Rice-Oxley, Richard Hughes, and Tom Chaplin. A band that has been brewing impatiently for a break, they signed with BMG in 2002 to craft a beautiful raw-but-refined sound.
You may mistake the vocals and piano work as ColdPlay at first listen; but you’ll hear their differences are youth, innocence and energy. The song, “Somewhere Only We Know” has a very digestable melody and lyrics, touch your empathy strings because it describes in first person the uncertainty of being old, alone and unloved.
Any-day-any-mood ballads like “This is the Last Time” and “Snowed Under” are quite ear-pleasing; not too catchy yet not too boring. As Keane gets more mature, they will undoubtedly transition their story-telling lyrics to have include more vivid descriptions.

Music ShoppingMall is pleased that Keane’s debut didn’t hit too on-the-mark on the North American billboards; because we definitely want to hear their music and experience grow for years to come. We give this album a Must-Buy rating because they have a distinctive sound; and you’ll love bragging to people that you found them out first.

Somewhere Only We Know - Lyrics
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
And if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?
[break]
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
So if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go
So why don’t we go
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?

The 3 instruments employed in their songs — vocals, drums, and piano — gel so well. Right now I am in this Keane phase, where I can’t get enough of them on the radio. I even catch myself humming it in the shower.
If I had the voice or instrumental talent to perform any of these songs, I would. Hopefully you do, and would appreciate these links to sheet music for their two albums (below). Please do click on them and see if you’d like to purchase them. I’d be so envious of you if you are able to read and play these powerful modern songs.
