A Little Respect by Erasure. 1988

The song “A Little Respect” was written and sung by the English pop duo Erasure. Erasure was formed by the former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke, and the singer Andy Bell.
This song was one of many of their hits on their 1988 smash hit album title “The Innocent” on the UK and American and Latin America charts.

The song to this day is still proudly played on the radio and is deemed retro-cool. Thankfully the song was light on the synthesizer and focused on the melody, which to this day is still very distinct “catchy”. If it wasn’t noteworthy, we wouldn’t be writing about it!
I say “catchy” because it’s has a very upbeet tempo and message. The vocal range and the poetry of the song aren’t stellar, so we can’t upgrade this song rating to a “must-have”. I enjoy the part where he repeats “That you give me no, That you give me no” because he changes the tune and the octave. There are so many songs which have repeat lyrics that just switch the octave and eventually get boring; but this song is one of those — THANKFULLY.
At any rate, the song and most of the other tunes on this album are very solid and consistent tracks which is very worthy of a download.
Here are the song lyrics:
I try to discover
A little something to make me sweeter
Oh baby refrain from breaking my heart
Im so in love with you
Ill be forever blue
That you give me no reason
Why youre making me work so hard
That you give me no
That you give me no
That you give me no
That you give me no
Soul, I hear you calling
Oh baby please give a little respect to me
And if I should falter
Would you open your arms out to me
We can make love not war
And live at peace in our hearts
Im so in love with you
Ill be forever blue
What religion or reason
Could drive a man to forsake his lover
Dont you tell me no
Dont you tell me no
Dont you tell me no
Dont you tell me no
Soul, I hear you calling
Oh baby please give a little respect to me
Im so in love with you
Ill be forever blue
That you give me no reason
You know youre making me work so hard
That you give me no
That you give me no
That you give me no
That you give me no
Soul, I hear you calling
Oh baby please give a little respect to me
Soul, I hear you calling
Oh baby please give a little respect to me
One of my favourite lines is “Soul, I hear you calling”. Honestly, who would write a line that calls out to your own soul? I thought that was very original.
Here’s where you have purchase some Erasure sheet music. I’ve always wondered what it would sound like without the synthesizer and if it was a slow contemporary acoustic ballad?
