I thought we’d never hear from The Wallflowers again — it’s been so long since their last album, Red Letter Days. Surprise! Surprise! when I saw a poster of their newest album, “Rebel, Sweetheart”, proudly pasted on new music wall of my local record shop.

Jacob Dylan and the rest of his band has spent their last 3 years in reflection ( I’m guessing ), while crafting their latest album “Rebel, Sweetheart”. The album seems to have a good grasp of the basics — guitar, vocals, and a bitter melody.

“God Says Nothing Back”, ” How Far You’ve Come”, and “The Passenger” are lyrically vibrant songs in the compilation with metaphors and analogies galore! The tunes are catchy yet non mainstreams — just the way you alternative lovers want your songs to be.

Hard hitting lyrics save this album from being tossed into the “it’s ok for now but i’m never gonna listen to it again” pile.

Some notable excerpts from track 6, “God Says Nothing Back”. The whole song is a pure poem, a true hum-dinger:

Seems like the world’s gone underground
No gods or heroes dare to go down
Teardrops from a hole in heaven come
Overhead like ravens dropping down like bombs

Through the mornings silver frosted glow
God says nothing back but I told you so
I told you so

God bless the void of my daydreams
Head back in the snow making angel wings
As slow motion dancing lights at dawn
Sail beneath a burning yellow sun

I’m calling out from the deep ends of my bones
Time says nothing back but I told you so
I told you so

Still waters rising in my mind
Black and deep, smoke behind my eyes
Last night I could not sleep at all
I hallucinated that you were in my arms

To be in your heart I failed my own
Love says nothing back but I told you so
I told you so

Still here reclimbing every rung
Someone saw something
Now Someone speak up
Back over the rotted bridge I cross
Open up these graves, let these bodies talk

Burried under leaves blood red and gold
Death says nothing back but I told you so
I told you so
